Businesses rent [machines like this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjCgyK6gI20) that cast multiple lights that pivot and zip around in a variety of patterns. If humidity is low enough below the cloud cover, you can’t see the beams, just the spots shining on the underside of the cloud.
