I see far too many people posting videos of stars in the sky and claiming they spotted a UFO. I took this video of Sirius in Utah back in the fall. It appears to be shifting and changing colors. This phenomenon, known as atmospheric scintillation, occurs when starlight passes through different layers of the atmosphere, causing it to refract and create a twinkling effect. Combine this with autofocus adjustments and low-light conditions you could probably convince someone this is a UFO. It is not.

  1. Can you point to examples where this is happening, people making this mistake? Thanks in advance.
