Milky Way Core rising above a sailing stone in Death Valley National Park

  1. Mysterious tracks on this dried lakebed were carved by rocks, moved by an elusive natural force. This phenomenon puzzled researchers for years until 2014, when two scientists captured the process on camera. Their timelapse revealed the secret: on frigid winter nights, thin ice sheets form beneath the rocks. As temperatures rise and winds pick up, these sheets begin to melt, allowing the rocks to glide across the lakebed.

    This site in Death Valley National Park, fittingly called Racetrack Playa, is home to many such “sailing stones” and their enigmatic trails. Adding to its allure, the area boasts one of the darkest skies in the country, making it a haven for both geological mysteries and stargazing enthusiasts.
